Special Stitches

Shell (sh): Work [(3 dc-cl, ch 2) twice, 3 dc-cl] into the stitch indicate

Hat measures 21” circumference, height 8.5.” Average adult woman hat

Gauge: 2 inch by 2 inch = 8 stitches and 11 rows

Hat Body Instruction

Phase 1: Creating the Band

Foundation: Start by making a Ch 85.

Row 1: Work a sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and continue with a sc in each stitch across. Turn your work (84 sts).

Row 2: For this row, Ch 1 and work a sc in the same stitch. Next, skip 1 stitch and then work 2 sc in the following stitch. Repeat this sequence from * to the end before turning.

Row 3: Ch 2 and skip the first sc. Afterward, work 2 sc in the next stitch. * Sk the next sc, then work 2 sc in the following stitch. Repeat from * to the end and turn.

Row 4: Simply repeat the instructions for Row 3.

Row 5: Finish the band by working a sc in the first stitch and every stitch across. Turn (84 sts).

Phase 2: Joining and Working in the Round

Assembly: After finishing the rows, weave in your ends. Then, attach your button to the band by overlapping the ends (skipping 4 stitches) to secure the shape.

Completing the Hat Body. Once the band is finished, you will be working in the round. Consequently, you will see the beautiful texture of the shells and x-stitches begin to form as you progress through rounds 5–20.

You will be working in the round.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around. (80 sts)

Rnd 2: RS sc in 1st sc, *sk 3 sts. sh in next st. ch 1, sk 3 sts, Then, sc in the next st. After that, repeat from *. * across. sl st into sc to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, (counts as dc) dc in 1st sc. * ch 2, sk 1 dc-cl, sc in next dc-cl.ch 2, 3 dc in next sc,; rep from * around, sl st to ch 3. turn

Rnd 4:Ch 1, sc in same as ch 1, ch 2, 3 dc in next st. ch 2,  sk dc-cl, sc in next dc-cl; rep from * around, sl st to sc. Turn

Rnds 5-9: ch 2. sk next st, dc into next st, dc in skipped previous st, (makes an x st), sk next st, repeat from * to * sl st into ch 2 to join

Rnd 10-ch 1, sc in 1st st, sc in each st across to end, sl st into ch 1, turn

Shaping the Crown

Shaping the Crown Rnd 11-13: Ch 1, work a sc in the 1st stitch and in each stitch across to the end. Sl st into the ch 1 and turn


Rnd 14: Next, ch 2 and skip the next stitch. Work a dc into the following stitch, then work a dc in the skipped previous stitch to create your X-stitch. Skip the next stitch and repeat from * to * before joining with a sl st into the ch 2.

Rnd 15: Ch 3 and skip the next 2 stitches. Sc in the next stitch, then ch 3 and repeat from * to * around. Sl st into the first chain and turn your work.


Rnd 16- sc into first ch of previous row. *dc, tc, tc dc, sc, in same
chain 3 sp, sc into next ch. * repeat from * to * sl st into sc.Turn


(On rnd 17 you will see a post made in the previous row. Sl st
behind every post.)


Rnd 17- ch 3, sl st behind post of previous row, ch 3, repeat
from * to * turn


Rnd 18 – sc into 1st ch 3, dc, tc, tc, dc, sc all in ch 3sp, sc into next ch, dc, tc, tc ,dc, sc in same ch 3 Repeat from * to * turn


Rnd 19- repeat rnd 17


Rnd 20- repeat rnd 18


Finish off Weave in ends
